November 2026

Almost every first trip to China includes the Great Wall, and almost every first-timer asks the same question: which section? From Beijing, three answers come up again and again. Mutianyu is the all-rounder, Badaling is the famous and easy one, and Jinshanling is for people who want a real hike and fewer people.
Here's how we'd explain the choice to a friend.
The short answer
- First visit, with family or limited time: Mutianyu.
- Want the most famous section and the easiest public transport: Badaling, on a weekday.
- Want to hike, take photos and avoid crowds: Jinshanling, if you're happy with a longer drive.
Mutianyu vs Badaling vs Jinshanling compared
| Mutianyu | Badaling | Jinshanling | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crowds | Moderate | Busiest, especially weekends and holidays | Usually quiet |
| Walking | Restored, some steep stretches | Restored, wide, steep in places | Partly restored, partly weathered; real hiking |
| Ways up | Cable car, chairlift; toboggan down | Cable car | Cable car |
| Rough drive from central Beijing | About 1.5 hours | About 1–1.5 hours | About 2 hours (around 130 km) |
| Public transport | Bus with a transfer | Easiest (bus or train) | Hard without a car |
| Adult admission (2026) | CNY 45 | CNY 40 (Apr–Oct), CNY 35 (Nov–Mar) | CNY 65 (peak), CNY 55 (off-peak) |
Drive times are typical, not guaranteed. Beijing traffic can add an hour on weekends and holidays.
Mutianyu: the best all-rounder
Mutianyu is well restored, has thick forest on both sides (beautiful in autumn), and gives you several ways up and down.
- Tickets: CNY 45 admission, plus CNY 15 for the shuttle bus from the visitor centre to the entrance. The enclosed cable car is CNY 100 one way or CNY 140 return (official Mutianyu site). The open chairlift up and toboggan down are run separately, and their tickets can't be swapped with cable-car tickets.
- Real-name booking: tickets are booked with your passport, one ticket per passport per day, and you enter by showing that same passport. Unused tickets can be refunded or changed on the platform before midnight on the visit date (official notice).
- Gates: cable-car ticket holders enter at the North Gate; chairlift and toboggan holders enter at the slide gate. Pick your ticket before you arrive.
- Hours: peak season (March 16 to November 15) roughly 7:30–18:00 on weekdays, 7:30–18:30 at weekends; off season 8:00–17:30. Ticket sales stop an hour before closing.
- Getting there by public transport: Express Bus 916 from Dongzhimen to Huairou Beidajie, then a local bus such as H23 to Mutianyu (Beijing Municipal Government). Allow two hours or more each way.
Good for: families, first-timers, anyone who wants the views without a hard hike.
Badaling: the famous one
Badaling is the best-known section. It's wide, restored and well equipped, and it's the easiest to reach without a car. It's also the busiest.
- Tickets: CNY 40 from April 1 to October 31 and CNY 35 from November 1 to March 31. Under-18s and seniors 60+ get free admission with valid ID (Beijing Municipal Government). The cable car costs extra.
- Booking: the Beijing government page says tickets can be bought on site, but the scenic area pushes real-name booking ahead. Sources disagree, so book ahead for weekends and holidays and bring the passport you booked with.
- Hours: the Beijing government page lists 6:30–16:30 in peak season and 7:30–16:00 in the off season. Other official listings show longer hours, so check the day before.
- Getting there: public options include bus 919 from Deshengmen and the S2 suburban train (Beijing Municipal Government).
Good for: travellers on public transport, or anyone who wants "the" Great Wall and doesn't mind company. Go early on a weekday.
Jinshanling: for hikers and photographers
Jinshanling sits on the Beijing–Hebei border. Its towers follow a ridge for kilometres, with restored sections mixed with weathered ones. On a clear morning it's the most dramatic of the three.
- Tickets: CNY 65 in peak season (April 1 to October 31) and CNY 55 in the off season, per Visit Beijing. Cable car and shuttle cost extra.
- Hours: listings differ (Visit Beijing shows 6:30–18:30 in peak season), so confirm with the scenic area (tel. 0314-8830222) before you go.
- Passports: confirm the ID the ticketing page accepts before paying, since some of its pages describe the Chinese ID card process only.
- Getting there: realistically by car, about two hours each way.
Good for: fit walkers who want space, sunrise light and photos without crowds. Wear proper shoes; some steps are steep and uneven.
Going on your own vs joining a day tour
On your own
- Cheapest, and you set the pace.
- You handle real-name tickets, bus transfers and the return trip yourself. Mutianyu and Badaling are very doable; Jinshanling is hard without a car.
A group day tour
- Tickets and getting there are handled, often with an English-speaking guide.
- Less flexible, and some cheap tours add shopping stops. Read what's included before booking.
A private trip
- Your own pace and your choice of section, which matters most for Jinshanling.
- Costs more than a group tour.
When to go
- Best: April–May and September–October, with mild weather and clear skies. Mid to late October brings autumn colours, especially at Mutianyu and Jinshanling.
- Summer: hot and sometimes hazy; go early.
- Winter: cold and windy, but quiet, and snow on the Wall is beautiful. Check opening hours and cable-car operation.
- Avoid if you can: China's national holidays, especially the first week of October, when every section is crowded.
A simple day plan (Mutianyu)
- 7:00 Leave central Beijing.
- 8:30 Arrive, scan your passport and take the shuttle bus.
- 9:00–12:00 Cable car up, walk the towers, chairlift or toboggan down if you've chosen that route.
- 12:30 Lunch near the visitor centre.
- 14:00 Head back, aiming to reach Beijing before the evening rush.
