Yamdrok Lake in Tibet — a sacred turquoise lake ringed by brown hills and snow peaks, seen from the Kamba La pass on the road from Lhasa

Tibet Road Trip — Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake & Shigatse

The plateau by road, done the only way open to foreign visitors: an organised, permit-guided trip — the Potala Palace and Jokhang in Lhasa, the turquoise sweep of Yamdrok Lake, Gyantse and Shigatse, paced gently for the altitude.

Tibet, honestly: permits first, then the plateau

Foreign visitors can't travel Tibet independently or self-drive there — there's no way around it, whatever an old blog says. What you can do is this: an organised trip where the operating agency arranges your Tibet Travel Permit in advance, and a licensed guide and local driver travel with you throughout. Within that frame, the road is the best of it — over the 4,800 m Kamba La pass to Yamdrok Lake, on through Gyantse's fortress town to Shigatse, with the pacing kept gentle because Lhasa itself sits at 3,650 m. Tell us early if Tibet is the dream: permits take lead time.

With a guide, not a guidebook: a licensed English-speaking guide and a local driver travel with you throughout Tibet — a permit requirement, and genuinely the better way to see it.

Day-by-day itinerary

This is a sample itinerary, so you can see what each day actually looks like — the driving, the scenery and where you sleep. The order is set by acclimatisation and permit logistics; your confirmed day-by-day plan, with named hotels, comes with your quote once permits are in motion.

  1. Day 1

Arrive in Lhasa — take it slowly

Your guide meets you with the permit paperwork handled. Rest at the hotel, hydrate, and — only if you're feeling fine — a gentle first turn of the Barkhor circuit with the pilgrims by evening.

    Stay: Lhasa (3,650 m)

Pilgrims and prayer wheels on the Barkhor circuit in Lhasa, Tibet, whitewashed walls and market stalls along the street
  2. Day 2

The Potala Palace & the Jokhang

The Potala in the morning — up its steps slowly, through the chapels of the Dalai Lamas' winter palace. Afternoon at the Jokhang, Tibet's holiest temple, as the Barkhor fills with pilgrims.

  3. Day 3

The great monasteries — Drepung & Sera

Drepung in the morning, once the largest monastery in the world. After lunch, Sera — and its famous afternoon monk debates: clapping, laughter and entirely serious philosophy in the courtyard. The liveliest hour in Lhasa.

  4. Day 4

Yamdrok Lake — the turquoise day

Out of the city with your driver, over the 4,800 m Kamba La pass — placed late in the trip, once you've acclimatised — to Yamdrok, a sacred lake of impossible turquoise ringed by brown hills and snow peaks. A short walk on the shore, then back down to Lhasa by evening.

Drive: ~220 km round tripStay: Lhasa

  5. Day 5

    Lhasa → Gyantse

The road west along the Yarlung valley to Gyantse, the plateau's great old trading town: the Pelkor Chode monastery and its Kumbum — a nine-storey mandala of chapels — under the fort on the hill.

    Drive: ~260 kmStay: Gyantse

  6. Day 6

    Gyantse → Shigatse

A shorter hop to Tibet's second city. Tashilhunpo Monastery — seat of the Panchen Lamas, a gilded city-within-a-city — in the afternoon light.

    Drive: ~90 kmStay: Shigatse

  7. Day 7

Drive back to Lhasa — a last Barkhor circuit

The expressway back along the river to Lhasa. A slow final evening: butter tea, one last clockwise turn of the Barkhor, and souvenirs that are actually from here.

    Drive: ~280 kmStay: Lhasa

  8. Day 8

    Depart Lhasa

Tibet road trip FAQ

How far ahead do permits need?

Start early — the Tibet Travel Permit is arranged by the operating agency once your booking and China visa are in place, and it takes lead time. As a rule, talk to us at least a month before you want to travel; more is better.

Can any part of this be self-drive?

No — independent self-driving isn't an option for foreign visitors in Tibet, on any licence. This route runs with a licensed guide and a local driver throughout, which the permit requires.
